Procrastination is the unreasonable delaying of tasks until the last minute or even past their deadline. It is when you delay an important chore without reasoning despite being aware of the potential unhealthy consequences. But why do people tend to procrastinate?
Procrastination sets in place due to the failure of self-regulation. It is when you cannot manage your time for completion of the tasks that are important rather you engage in unnecessary or unproductive activities. Not only will it leave your current projects undone but also burdens your mind when you pile up your work for doing it later. It leads to stress and eventually you are more likely to underperform or underachieve.
"You may delay, but time will not, and lost time is never found again." - Benjamin Franklin
Let’s think for a moment about the sense of comfort and joy you get when you check today’s tasks off of your list. How rewarding is that, to get some free time to read a book with a warm cup of coffee, or to watch your favorite show?
Now the question arises, how one can get rid of procrastination?
Well, it is about learning self-regulation for the most part. To practice self-regulation, the prime factor is to be familiar with stepping outside of your comfort zone i.e. to accept the tasks as challenges with a definitive deadline and working straight away for their accomplishment. And for that matter, you should divide your major goal into smaller steps and work on one at a time.
